Is Robert Peston about to head Radio 4?

BBC business editor Robert Peston has emerged as one of the candidates for the job of Radio 4 controller.  The charismatic Peston [that's what it says here] is understood to have been interviewed by the BBC last week in an attempt to whittle down the number of applicants to find a successor to Mark Damazer, who leaves in September.

The news may surprise some as it was thought within the media industry that Peston may succeed political editor Nick Robinson, who has been widely tipped to move to Radio 4's Today programme.  Peston, renowned for his idiosyncratic presenting style, has been the BBC's business editor since 2006 but before that he was both political editor and financial editor of the Financial Times.
