A staunchly anti-gay California state senator has been arrested for drink driving after reportedly leaving a gay club in Sacramento. Senator Roy Ashburn, a Republican from Bakersfield, was spotted driving erratically in downtown Sacramento in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He was arrested after taking a breathalyser test and later charged with driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.8 per cent or higher. A male passenger in the car, who has not been identified, was released without charge.
Now, you see I'm looking at that shirt and tie and I'm thinking ... FAGGOT!
The father-of-four, 55, who represents parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties, has voted against every gay rights measure since becoming a senator, according to Project Vote Smart - a website that tracks voting records. A statement issued after his arrest said: 'I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuses for my poor judgement. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences of what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me - my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.' Senator Ashburn was arrested after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento, according to cbs13.com. A spokesman for the senator declined to comment on whether he had been in the club. Senator Ashburn served for six years as a state assemblyman before being elected to the Senate.
