Nigel Griffiths, a former minister and close ally of Gordon Brown, announced in a letter to party activists that he is to become director of an international educational institute. He was facing defeat in his Edinburgh South seat, which is a three-way marginal that he held in the 2005 election with a majority of only 400. Mr Griffiths, 54, was subject of a tabloid sting in 2008 [a News of the World exclusive!] in which he was photographed with a woman on a sofa in his parliamentary office [what must those sofas be like?!].
